IMI Critical Korea has achieved a Lean score of 82%, just 3% short of world class, in its assessment at the end of last year.
This fantastic performance is the result of the continued application of LEAN techniques throughout the manufacturing process, and the extension of them into the back office. Over the past two years the Obeya concept has been implemented into sales and quoting processes; value-stream mapping has been introduced for financial processes; Heijunka Boards have been installed around the whole site; and planned and actual outputs are tracked at every work area.
Most recently, the Korea team implemented a Quality Review Station, aimed at achieving substantial reductions in the facility's cost of quality (COQ). The Quality Review Station (QRS) is located prominently in the facility, with a Material Review Board at its centre, so that open QRS orders can be tracked easily, and discussed by all members of the team involved in delivery at meetings scheduled daily and weekly.
Following the implementation of the Quality Review Station, IMI Critical Korea more than halved its cost of quality, to 0.14% of sales. "Our Korean team show how we can use Lean techniques right across the business to improve our efficiency and profitability," said Roy Twite, Divisional Managing Director of IMI Critical. "Their hard work has delivered better outcomes for the business and for our customers – keep up the good work."
IMI Critical in Korea has over 200 employees, and produces a full range of control, conventional and desuperheaters for the thermal and nuclear power industries.
