As part of its commitment to the health and safety of employees, IMI Critical tracks the number of days each site goes without a lost time accident (LTA). LTAs are the result of accidents and injuries which occasionally occur despite the division’s ongoing investment in safety procedures and training.
Several sites have celebrated excellent results, with long periods of time free of LTAs, including:
The results are a credit to the individual sites, whose job it is to ensure safety issues remain front of mind, and that employees are vigilant about looking after themselves and their colleagues.
IMI Critical operates IMI plc’s corporate “behaviour based on safety” (BBS) programme, which emphasises the important role every employee can play in delivering safety, health and well-being in the workplace. With around 80% of accidents related to employee actions, one key element of this is a Stop-Call-Wait safety standard, which empowers every employee to stop a process they think is dangerous, and to escalate their concerns to address any safety risks.
Recently, the division has launched a Learning to See programme to ensure that safety, and proactive prevention of incidents, remains at the forefront of everyone’s mind.
Accidents, when they do happen, cause significant distress. For example, at IMI Z&J, “the accident of one our experienced employees in August 2015 was a severe shock for all of our team at the site,” according to HSE Manager Jochen Kothen. Risk assessments on all machines were undertaken, 5s was implemented to improve tidiness for safety, and safety training became part of daily practice. At IMI Z&J, 13 employees became safety mentors, taking responsibility for the care of their colleagues.” As a result, accidents requiring first aid fell by a third in a year. The team is not content – they are aiming for “goal zero, no accidents, no incidents”.
IMI Interativa's 'Guardian Angel' programme rewards employees for every quarter without LTAs with an 'all-hands' lunch chosen by employees.
