Downstream / Refinery

Refineries process oil and gas into fuel for cars, ships, aviation and domestic homes. They also produce intermediate products, notably ethylene and naphtha, as feedstocks for petrochemical and industrial plants.

One of the key processes at the heart of a refinery is the Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) unit which converts crude oil into specific grades of fuels. Key applications include the reaction area, where the feedstock and catalyst flow at up to 800°C in a highly corrosive environment, and the flue gas system, where the efficient recovery of energy is vital to margin and profitability of the plant. IMI Critical’s subsidiaries provide bespoke severe service valves for every specialist application in the FCC, individually tailored to the unit’s feedstock, process conditions and output.

Other key processes include delayed coking (DC), amine let-down, propane dehydrogenation (PDH) and ethylene production.
